What the Fungi?
Diving into the world of mushrooms, can be overwhelming with all the jargon. Fear not! We'll guide you through the world of fungi.

Psychedelic /sʌɪkɪˈdɛlɪk/
comes from the greek word psyche which means soul, spirit, mind and consciousness; and the word deloun which means to manifest, make evident, visible and reveal.

Psychedelics
are plants, fungi, or chemicals that alter mood, perception, and cognition. They amplify our awareness of thoughts, feelings, and sensory perceptions. Humans have had a relationship with them for thousands of years, and today science is turning to them for solutions to treat a multitude of conditions.

Psilocybin
Psilocybin is a naturally occurring psychedelic compound present in over 200 species of mushrooms and truffles. When consumed, it is converted to psilocin in the gut. It enhances sensory perception and can lead to profound experiences, often facilitating deeper introspection and emotional processing.

Microdosing Mushrooms
is the practice of taking very small, sub-perceptual doses of mushrooms, also referred to as Magic Mushrooms, that contain psilocybin. This practice can improve cognition, mood, and overall well-being and repair damaged neuro connections.

Magic Truffles
are the sclerotia of psilocybin mushrooms. Sclerotia grow underground and are feeding pockets for the mushrooms. They contain small and therapeutic amounts of psilocybin and are increasingly being used as a natural supplement to improve mental and physical capacities.

Serotonin Receptors
are brain receptors affected by psilocybin. Psilocybin primarily activates serotonin 2A receptors, which influence mood, perception, and cognition, contributing to its therapeutic effects and benefits.

Default Mode Network (DMN)
is a brain network that decreases in activity with psilocybin use. It’s often overactive in those with depression and anxiety. Dimming the DMN interrupts negative thought patterns, allowing for greater emotional flexibility.

Neuroplasticity
refers to the brain's ability to change and adapt based on experiences. Microdosing can stimulate brain cells, helping them form new connections and grow branches.

Spinogenesis
is the formation of new dendritic spines on neurons. These spines enhance synaptic connections, and psychedelics have been shown to boost this process, promoting neuroplasticity.

Neurogenesis
is the creation of new neurons in the brain. While this process is key during childhood, recent research suggests that psilocybin may promote dendritic growth and neurogenesis in adults, supporting cognitive health.

Synaptic Plasticity
s the ability of synapses (connections between neurons) to strengthen or weaken over time. Psychedelics like psilocybin are believed to enhance this, aiding learning, memory, and mental adaptability.

Microbiome and Psychedelics
refers to the emerging research suggesting a link between gut health and brain health. Psilocybin may positively impact the gut microbiome, influencing mood and cognition through the gut-brain axis.

Mindful Microdosing
is the practice of being present and intentional while taking microdosing supplements to achieve greater wellness and joy. This approach often involves mindfulness practices such as self-love, gratitude, and manifestation.

Biohacking
is the practice of optimizing mind and body for longevity and high performance. Psychedelics are increasingly associated with biohacking, which is gaining popularity among women seeking enhanced wellness.

Set & Setting
refers to the mindset and physical environment during microdosing. Your mental state, goals, and surroundings play a key role in the effectiveness of the experience. Positive guidance, such as Mabel’s Mindful Microdosing Programme, helps maximize benefits.

Flow State
is a state of being fully immersed and focused, often leading to high productivity and creativity. Microdosing has been reported to help users more easily enter a flow state.

Integration
is the process of incorporating the insights and experiences from microdosing or psychedelic use into everyday life. Reflective practices like journaling or therapy can help integrate these insights for long-term benefits.

Functional Mushrooms
are mushrooms that offer health benefits beyond their basic nutritional value. They are both adaptogenic (helping the body manage stress) and nootropic (enhancing cognitive function). Common functional mushrooms include Reishi, Lion’s Mane, Cordyceps, and Chaga.

Mycelium
is the root-like network below ground that helps the mushroom grow. While some companies include mycelium in their products as a cheap filler, it generally contains fewer bioactive compounds than the fruiting body.

Beta-Glucans
these are polysaccharides found in mushrooms that help regulate the immune system. They stimulate immune cells like macrophages, T-cells, and natural killer cells, promoting immune health and defense against infections.

Dextrin
Chemical fillers, used to speed up mushroom drying, are a big no-go in our supplements. They provide no health benefits and can dilute potency. High-quality mushroom supplements should contain pure extracts for maximum beneficial compounds like beta-glucans.

Nootropics
functional mushrooms, such as Lion’s Mane, are classified as nootropics, which are substances that support brain health and cognitive function. Lion’s Mane, in particular, has been shown to stimulate nerve growth factor (NGF), which supports the growth and survival of neurons.

Fruiting Body
is the part of the mushroom visible above ground which is packed with medicinal compounds.

Adaptogens
functional mushrooms like Reishi and Cordyceps are adaptogens, meaning they help the body resist stress and restore balance. These mushrooms can support the adrenal glands and improve the body’s response to physical, emotional, or environmental stressors.

Prebiotics
are found in functional mushrooms, like Chaga and Lions Mane. Prebiotics feed beneficial bacteria in the gut. This helps to support a healthy microbiome and overall digestive health and are directly linked to mental health balance.

Triterpenes
are compounds known for their anti-inflammatory and immune-boosting properties. They also contribute to liver health and have antioxidant effects. They are very present in Reishi, which you of course find in our Midnight Manna.
